"A Voice-over is a production technique where a voice is broadcasted live or pre-recorded and the voice accompanies a film, TV program, radio programme, presentation or even on-line training course or instructions.
In other words a voice-over is an “off camera” commentary”

My name is Milada Cogginsová Zajíčková and my native language is Czech. I also speak fluently in English – with a typical East European accent.

Voice-over training:

During the last 18 months I attended two training sessions for voice-over recording by Daniel Pageon of Actor’s World Production in London. One valuable lesson from those sessions was to read aloud every day, which I do.

I live permanently in Oxfordshire in the UK but I’m still trying to keep in touch with the current affairs and happenings in the Czech Republic.

Thanks to satellite reception I am able to watch daily broadcasting of the Czech TV channels. This is a great way to observe how the modern Czech language is developing and to keep up with contemporary spoken Czech. For example what new expressions have been adopted from foreign languages - very often from English. And of course, this allows me to enjoy watching old and new Czech films and TV dramas.

Seeing British or other foreign films both in English and Czech is not only entertaining but also good exercise for thinking about translation of dialogues for dubbing. Besides that I practice simultaneous interpreting by interpreting narratives of documentary programmes, film dialogues or TV news to the English members of my family.

Equipment and technical

I work with the following:

  • PC with Windows Vista and Office XP with large memory capacity
  • PC sound card
  • External Hard Drive
  • Adobe Audition – Software for editing audio recordings
  • High speed ADSL Broadband

Alternatively, I can produce my voice-recording with the use of top quality analogue sound equipment: A high speed Revox ¼” tape machine, AKG microphones, Audio and Design compressors and equalisers, valve mic preamps, etc. This can then be transferred to digital, in various formats.

With the recording an editing from my own office I get assistance from a BBC trained sound engineer with a professional background in electronics and audio equipment design. Therefore I can fully concentrate on correct pronounciation and presentation of my reading without having to worry about the technical side of the voice-recording.
