Case study – HR Manager interviewing Slovak employee while investigating allegation of sexual harassment

Within 40 minutes on the telephone the Slovak employee was able to give his evidence regarding the allegation.  The HR manager was then able to obtain all the necessary information to ascertain that the offence was not committed by this particular member of staff.

Case study – Peugeot helpdesk

I provided telephone interpreting for the Peaugeot helpdesk between 2002 and 2004.  In instances where a car is not malfunctioning due to mechanical problems but due to problems with the electronic system, the manufacturer has a set of procedures and a log of listed solutions for reported  problems.  Because the cars are distributed in many countries it would not be practical to translate and print out all the documentation in all those languages.  With this centralised system, the car mechanics in the Czech Republic can easily call the help desk and with the help of an interpreter can describe the problem and get instructions for fixing the problem or order any replacement parts. This work gave me plenty of experience using specialised terminology related to car manufacturing, car repairs and maintenance.

Case study – English solicitor / Slovak lorry driver who committed a road traffic offence

A UK court was dealing with a road traffic offence committed by a Slovak lorry driver. I interpreted for the English solicitor representing the lorry driver, who was back at home in Slovakia and following the solicitor’s advice pleaded guilty and agreed to pay the fine, which meant that he did not have to travel to the UK for the court hearing.

How to make the most of telephone interpreting?

The common practice is that my clients brief me in advance about the call they need to make. They inform me about the person who will be contacted and what will be discussed.

The client then sets up a conference call where I join before the foreign speaker is contacted so that once the call is connected to them, I am instantly able to interpret for the two or sometimes even more parties. I can also make calls to your Czech contacts on your behalf.
